In a growing international trend, Chile has joined countries like the United Kingdom and the Netherlands in limiting smartphone access in schools to improve student concentration and mental health. A school in Santiago has taken an innovative step by blocking cell phone signals on campus, encouraging teens to engage more with their environment.
Instead of spending their breaks on social media platforms like Instagram or filming TikTok videos, students are now seen frequenting the library, engaging in conversations at the café, or enjoying classic games in the schoolyard. To ensure compliance, students store their phones in black pouches equipped with magnets that prevent connectivity. These pouches are opened by staff after classes, allowing students to access their phones once the school day concludes.
Evidence backs this approach. According to a 2021 study by King's College London, adolescents who are heavily reliant on their mobile phones are twice as likely to experience anxiety and three times more likely to suffer from depression compared to those who aren't dependent on their devices.
This initiative in Santiago reflects a broader movement to address the mental health challenges linked to excessive smartphone use among young people. By fostering environments that promote face-to-face interaction and physical activity, schools aim to create healthier, more balanced lifestyles for students.
