Astana is gearing up for a significant upgrade in its public safety infrastructure, as a new AI-driven surveillance system is set to be launched by the end of December. This initiative is being spearheaded by the UAE-based firm, Presight, according to a recent announcement made by the city’s mayor, Zhenis Kassymbek, during a community meeting.
"We are on track to complete this stage by December," Kassymbek noted, highlighting the installation of over 20,000 new cameras. These will add to the existing surveillance network, with the installation expected to conclude by year-end.
Presight's presence in Astana was established in May 2025, following the closure of the previous Sergek project, which had been operational since 2017. The infrastructure from Sergek has since been transferred to the Emirati company, marking a new era in the city's surveillance capabilities.
The upcoming system boasts advanced features, including automatic detection of traffic offenses like illegal phone use while driving and seat belt violations. It also aims to predict potential threats, such as public disturbances or illegal activities, thereby boosting overall safety.
In a statement to Kursiv.media, city officials revealed that the Presight project carries a price tag of 93.2 billion tenge, roughly $173 million. This includes 53.5 billion tenge for the deployment of new cameras and infrastructure enhancements, and 39.7 billion tenge for maintenance over the next five years. The entire funding is being provided by the international partner.
Currently, Astana's surveillance network comprises around 6,000 cameras. Meanwhile, the Sergek system continues to operate in 12 other cities across Kazakhstan, maintaining its role in public safety measures.
